Sadly my father passed away unexpectedly on January 23. He was almost 88 years old.
It was the Warfarin (blood thinner) that got him
We had thought there was a good chance he would live to at least 90.
I had a good, but short time in Holland this Spring. The trip had been booked prior to my father's passing. My sister came out from British Columbia to help settle my mother into a retirement home here in Toronto while I was in Europe. A little while after it was decided that mom would move to a retirement home in Nelson B.C. so my sister can spend more time with her. I am continuing to deal with my parent's financial affairs, and I have the enormous job of getting their house cleaned out and ready for sale. It's located a two hour drive from Toronto
The Lentituin (Spring Garden) flower show was quite lovely again this year. The most exciting news was three tetraploid Reticulata varieties shown by Boltha B.V. They were typical Iris Reticulata blues and purple. Of particular note was the fact they were exceptionally tall; almost too tall. I wonder if this is normal, or a result of something about the way they were forced.
This year I got to see a number of my hybrids in bloom in the field. That gave me a chance to see how they looked in Holland conditions, plus check that they were properly labelled.
I was quite pleased to see there was about 41 meters of one of the original hybrids Wim had tested. In theory he should be able to plant out 100 m of it this fall. I'm not sure when we will be starting sales of it.
